The Power of Connectivity
September 30, 2026
Artists are typically introverts.
We like to sit in empty places, watch things unfold from the outskirts, and are typically most comfortable alone with our muse. But it is a healthy practice, I think, to push outside our comfort zone and experience places and people who challenge us.
I would define myself as an introvert who under most circumstances only uncovers my extroverted nature with intention. I choose to put myself in enviroments with people who are ambitious, driven, supportive, and talented, not because they are more likely to buy my art, but because they inspire me to keep pushing myself to higher levels. To not be afraid of my own success or failure and to see things from a perspective I may not have seen otherwise.
I am often asked by aspiring artists, "How can I become better at figure drawing?"
My first suggestion is always, "Get yourself a book on anatomy for artists." It is not the answer most people expect...
But, when you have a better understanding of what lies beneath the surface, you will have a better understanding of what you are observing on the surface. And that is true with everything. If you want to be better at something, wether it is art, business, writing, playing a sport, or just being friendly, it pays to learn the fundamentals. Stop guessing and start asking the right questions. Open up to possibilites that may only exist through pathways you were once afraid to walk. Maybe you feel you won't fit in. Maybe you wonder if you're wasting your time.
But I've found that some of the most glorious and beneficial friendships and alliances bloom in unexpected places. Have you been wanting to go check out that club, do it! Wanted to learn a new skill, take the class! You aren't wasting time, you are broadening your horizons.
And if you stay open and generous, who knows who may find you there...
